What is Islam?

Islam is a divine religion based on the complete submission to Allah, following His commands, and worshipping Him alone. The word "Islam" originates from the Arabic root words meaning peace, submission, and obedience. It is a comprehensive way of life that provides guidance for all aspects of human existence, including personal, social, spiritual, and moral dimensions.

Core Principles of Islam

  1. Tawhid (Oneness of God):
The central belief of Islam is that Allah is the sole Creator and Sustainer of everything, and He has no partners or equals.

  2. Prophethood:
Islam teaches that Allah sent prophets and messengers to guide humanity. The final prophet is Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and the holy scripture revealed to him is the Quran.

  3. Akhirah (Hereafter):
Islam emphasizes that life on Earth is temporary, and every individual will be resurrected after death to account for their deeds. The righteous will be rewarded with Paradise, while wrongdoers will face punishment.

  4. Worship:
Muslims express gratitude to Allah and seek His pleasure through acts of worship and living a righteous life.

The Five Pillars of Islam

Islam is built upon five fundamental pillars:

  1. Shahada (Declaration of Faith):
Testifying that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and Muhammad is His messenger.

  2. Salah (Prayer):
    Performing the five daily prayers.

  3. Sawm (Fasting):
Observing fasting during the month of Ramadan.

  4. Zakat (Charity):
Giving a portion of one's wealth to help the poor and needy.

  5. Hajj (Pilgrimage):
Undertaking the pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in a lifetime, if financially and physically able.

Purpose and Goals of Islam

The primary objectives of Islam are:

  • To bring spiritual purification to individuals.
  • To establish justice and peace in society.
  • To encourage compassion, kindness, and respect for all creation.
  • To guide individuals to live according to the commands of Allah and fulfill their duties towards Him and others.

Islam is not just a religion but a complete way of life, calling for absolute devotion to Allah and striving for the betterment of humanity.
